IS ARTHRITIS LINKED WITH GUM DISEASE?
Those who suffer from the pain, stiffness, and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) should know that they may be at increased risk for gum disease. Research shows that people with RA are eight times more likely than others to have gum disease. Although no direct link has been proven, the association should prompt those with RA to pay special attention to their oral health. In its earliest stages, “gingivitis” (gum inflammation) causes gums to become swollen and bleed easily. At this point, a thorough cleaning by the hygienist and proper attention to brushing and flossing at home can help prevent gum disease from progressing. Otherwise, a more serious form of gum disease, “periodontitis,” can lead to bone and tooth loss.
You can prevent periodontal disease by practicing good oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly. Most people should see the dentist about once every six months. But if you already have gum disease you should visit more often. To schedule a consultation, please call ANNA DENTAL at (972) 924-2452. Patients actually enjoy visiting our office because we provide them with a comfortable place to come to for quality dental work. We are conveniently located at 701 W. White St., Suite 2, Anna.
P.S. Periodontitis can be effectively treated with a procedure known as “scaling and root planing,” which involves removing tartar and plaque from beneath the gum line. .
