Baby teeth serve important functions—helping with proper speech development, maintaining space for adult teeth, and allowing proper chewing—so we only suggest removal when it’s truly the best option for your child’s long-term dental health.

How is my child prepared for a tooth extraction?

Preparing your child for a tooth extraction involves both emotional and physical preparation. We’ll explain the procedure in age-appropriate, non-frightening terms, using friendly language like “wiggling the tooth out” rather than technical terminology. We encourage parents to maintain a positive attitude, as children often pick up on parental anxiety. Let your child know that their mouth will feel “sleepy” so they won’t feel pain.

Before beginning, we ensure your child is comfortable and thoroughly numb the area with local anesthetic. For anxious children or more complex extractions, we offer various sedation options ranging from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to oral sedation. What happens during my child's tooth extraction?

We check frequently to ensure they remain comfortable. Once the tooth is removed, we’ll place a small piece of gauze over the extraction site to help a blood clot form. The entire appointment, including preparation and aftercare instructions, typically takes 30-45 minutes, with the actual extraction being just a small portion of that time.

Is tooth extraction painful for children?

The extraction procedure itself should not be painful for your child, as we use effective local anesthesia to numb the area completely. Your child might feel pressure or movement during the extraction, but shouldn’t experience sharp pain. If your child indicates any discomfort during the procedure, we can always administer additional anesthetic to ensure they remain comfortable.

How long will it take my child to recover after a tooth extraction?

Most children recover remarkably quickly after a tooth extraction. The initial healing phase, where the extraction site forms a protective clot and begins to close, takes about 1-2 days. During this time, your child might experience some mild discomfort and should stick to soft foods. By the third day, most children feel back to normal and can resume regular activities, though the site continues to heal beneath the surface.

Complete healing of the socket takes about 1-2 weeks for baby teeth. Your child’s specific recovery time may vary depending on factors like their age, overall health, and whether it was a simple or surgical extraction. Following the aftercare instructions we provide will help promote faster healing. If your child’s extraction was performed to make room for braces or other orthodontic treatment, we’ll let you know when it’s appropriate to proceed with the next phase of their treatment plan.

What foods can my child eat after a tooth extraction?

For the first 24 hours after extraction, offer your child soft, cool foods that require minimal chewing and won’t disturb the extraction site. Good options include yogurt, applesauce, smoothies (eaten with a spoon, not a straw), ice cream, pudding, and mashed potatoes. Lukewarm soups are fine once the numbness has worn off completely to avoid accidental burns.

As healing progresses, gradually introduce slightly firmer foods while still having your child avoid chewing in the area of the extraction. By the second or third day, most children can handle pasta, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and soft-cooked vegetables. Continue to avoid hard, crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods that could irritate the site or become lodged in the socket. Most children can return to their normal diet within 3-5 days, though you should encourage them to chew on the opposite side of their mouth for about a week.

How should I care for my child after their tooth extraction?

After your child’s extraction, have them bite gently on the gauze we provide for about 20-30 minutes to help control bleeding. Some minor oozing is normal for the first day. Apply ice packs to the face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off during the first few hours to minimize swelling. Give recommended pain relievers as directed, and ensure your child stays hydrated but avoids using straws, which can dislodge the blood clot.

Encourage gentle oral hygiene, but have your child avoid brushing directly on the extraction site for 24 hours. After that, they can resume normal brushing while being careful around the area. Have them rinse gently with warm salt water (half teaspoon salt in 4 ounces warm water) starting 24 hours after the extraction, especially after meals. Limit physical activity for the first day, and discourage your child from touching the area with their tongue or fingers. If bleeding persists or pain increases after a few days, contact our office for guidance.

Will my child need a space maintainer after extraction?

Whether your child needs a space maintainer depends on which tooth was extracted and why. If a baby molar (back tooth) is removed significantly earlier than it would naturally fall out, a space maintainer is often recommended. These simple devices hold open the space where the tooth was removed, preventing adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap and blocking the permanent tooth from coming in properly later.

Front teeth typically don’t require space maintainers as they have less impact on spacing issues. Similarly, if a tooth is extracted because the permanent tooth is already emerging, a space maintainer wouldn’t be necessary. During your child’s extraction appointment, our doctors will evaluate whether a space maintainer is needed based on your child’s age, dental development, and the specific tooth being removed. If one is recommended, we’ll explain the type of maintainer suggested and the process for getting it placed.

When should I contact the dentist after my child's extraction?

Most extractions heal without complications, but there are certain situations that warrant contacting our office. Call us if your child experiences: bleeding that continues or increases after the first few hours; severe pain that isn’t relieved by recommended pain medications; swelling that worsens after 2-3 days instead of improving; fever developing several days after the extraction; or if your child complains of numbness that persists for more than a few hours after leaving our office.

While rare in children, another situation to watch for is dry socket, which can occur if the blood clot is dislodged prematurely. Symptoms include increasing pain beginning 3-4 days after extraction, sometimes with an unpleasant taste or odor. Don’t hesitate to call us with any concerns about your child’s recovery—we’re here to help ensure the healing process goes smoothly. Many issues can be easily addressed with proper guidance, and early intervention prevents minor complications from becoming more serious.

Will my child's speech be affected after losing a tooth?

Temporary speech changes are possible after losing front teeth, whether through natural loss or extraction. Your child might have some difficulty with certain sounds, particularly “th,” “f,” and “v” sounds that require the tongue to touch the front teeth. This is completely normal and usually resolves quickly as your child adapts or as permanent teeth begin to emerge.

Most children adjust to these changes remarkably well within a few days. The brain is quite adaptive, especially in children, and will help your child modify their speech patterns to accommodate the missing tooth. If you notice your child becoming frustrated with speech difficulties, offer gentle encouragement and remind them that it’s temporary. In the rare case that speech issues persist for more than a few weeks, particularly with multiple extractions, let us know during your follow-up appointment so we can assess whether a consultation with a speech therapist might be beneficial.

I had been having tooth pain for a year. The other day enough was enough. Within a hour of my first call I was in the office filling new patient paperwork out. Everyone was real nice, polite. Dr. Sharp was professional and polite. Even though he was very busy he still squeezed in my double tooth extraction because I can’t afford more time off from work. The procedure was as painless as it could have been. Dr. Sharp and his assistant stopping throughout the procedure to make sure I’m comfortable. Yes I was upset I was loosing two teeth, but that was the most uncomfortable part. These office is staffed by really great people and I will be back. Thank yall for taking care of me and so quickly.

I recently broke a crown on my front tooth close to the holidays and really needed to have it fixed. Dr. Kyle Young was able to see me in just a few days and not only removed my existing fractured crown, but also prepared the tooth, and manufactured my new crown in the clinic on the same day. He made sure that I was completely numb and happy with the shape, size, color of the crown and went as far as custom shading the crown so it matched my other teeth. The clinic is high tech and clean, and everyone was really nice and welcoming. They also provided me with the option to finance my treatment with no fees or interest. I am absolutely ecstatic with my crown and have had no issues, thanks to Dr. Young’s skill and expertise. Highly recommend!

I have had some needed work done and at 64 was not looking forward to getting it done. Then I hear about Anna Dental and how the folks there treated their customers. At first it was a little hard to believe and I felt like I was being sold a bit. Everything I was told was true and some. EVERYONE who I have been blessed to meet has been fantastic, A+++! I had a root canal and bridge done first and followed up with a few other minor issues under their In-House Service Program. GREAT JOB Anna Dental! This is the best dentist office I have ever visited! Everyone I have encountered has been so helpful and friendly. Kristy cleaned my teeth and we talked about my choice of toothpaste and floss. Dr. Sharp did a couple of treatments on my teeth a few months ago and he is SUPER! I have high dental anxiety (who at 75 doesn’t?) but I am almost relaxed with him. Another dentist referred me to a periodontal specialist in Dallas (live in Denison). The circumstances made me very uncomfortable so I came to Anna Dental for a second opinion. Sure glad I did! Signature Plan is great, too. Thank you all!

After having three awful experiences with highly reviewed pediatric dental offices with my three year old, we are so thankful we found Anna Dental! I was nervous to have my son receive sedation for several crowns he needed but Dr Sharp made sure I felt at ease and aware with what the procedure entailed. It made me feel much more confident and him and his anesthesiologist did a fantastic job. They were patient with my son while he got comfortable and went above and beyond to make sure it was a positive experience. Finding a trustworthy dental office is a difficult thing to find and we’re so grateful we found them!

Front desk was super friendly. I called needing to get my daughter in fast due to ortho appt and they were able to accommodate. On day of the hygienist got my daughter straight back, quickly cleaned, and talked to us like we’d been friends forever. Check out was quick and easy as well. All in all, super happy I switched my family over to Anna Dental! We’ve all had great experiences ever since!

Had to change dentist and the first clinic was good but buried and limited hours. Friends recommended Anna Family Dental and it was above expectations. Kind, effective, very communicative on current state. and provided clarity 180 degrees opposite of the other place. 1000’s saved but more importantly support that matters right where I am today. First visit was amazing and relieved many concerns.

They are great here at Anna Dental. They get you in quickly and everyone is so pleasant. Dr Sawires is the absolute best. He always makes me feel comfortable and helps me with my fears. I had to have some major dental work done (at least I feel like it was). Dr Sawires suggested the work to be done and could not have asked for a better dentist to do it. He was kind and cared about my concerns from the minute we decided to do the work. He treats his patients with the utmost caring and patience. He is a very caring man as well as a dentist. I would trust him with any work he suggest in the future. Kristy assisted and could not have been more kind and caring with me. She always answered my questions as if I was the only patient there. After the work was finished she checked on me several times to make sure I had no issues. Anna Dental is the best and I give a high five 💯 to Dr Sawires & Kristy. Thank you❤️👍

I wish I had Dr. S when I was a kid! He’s the most patient, kind, but still direct dentist I’ve ever met!!! We started with a plan and ended up with wonderful results!! I couldn’t be happier, he’s changed my life more than he could ever know. Also, the best staff in Anna!!! I appreciate them ALL!!!

Always friendly and professional and the teeth care 😁 is A-1. I hope they’ll be around for a long time. I had a really bad cavity, and the only remedy for me was to extract and have an implant inserted. They explained everything to me in detail and worked with me on setting up a payment plan. And the whole process was painless. A little pun intended since you would think that there would be a lot of pain! But no pain and I always receive the best treatment! I highly recommend Anna dental.

I will have to say the care and staff is probably one of the best dental places I have had through the years. This is coming from a person who has hated going to dentist! They will pit you at ease and upfront with everything from cost to care. I would Suggest that you take advantage of their dental plan. Much better than insurance and covers much more. Dr. Anderson is the best! She makes me feel comfortable and at ease. I had terrible dental anxiety and all of the staff make me feel relaxed. Have never been to a dentist that compares to Anna Dental in Anna Tx. This place is awesome, had 5 crowns put on and Dr. Sawires and his assistant were great from start to finish. Walked out of there with absolutely no discomfort at all. Thank you so much, will recommend this place as long as I’m in Texas.

Very nice and friendly staff. The receptionist knows everyone’s name and addresses them by name as soon as they enter the facility. The hygienist speak to you when you pass their room. I love the family friendly atmosphere and the dentist are awesome.

I am new to Anna, Texas and needed to find dental care as I have a lot of work that needs to be done. I went to several different dental offices and chose Anna Dental. They are reasonable with pricing, offer payment options, and are kind and professional. Most importantly, the doctor not only made a recommendation after careful evaluation but listened to my concerns and is very detailed about the treatments needed. I have had a couple appointments since my initial consultation and they have went very well. I recommend!

Love love love the people here- All of the people- Charity is an awesome welcoming presence when you walk in. Literally ALL of the hygienists and dental assistants are kind. If only every dental office was like this! We love this place so much that we pay out of pocket and drive 30 minutes to be able to come here. My hygenist, Angela, is meticulous and gentle with her work while also being personable and kind. The Doctor never pushes us into unnecessary work just for sake of profit. We really feel taken care of here. I always leave this place happy, which is saying something because I do not enjoy the dentist. Can’t recommend it more.

I learned a lot about dental implants in the last six months. If you’re thinking about going to Mexico to save money on dental implants, you’re making a mistake. There are way too many precise measurements and angles that must be perfect. Your new teeth need to go together, top teeth to bottom teeth, exactly where and how your real teeth did, or you will have problems. The tiny pieces of metal that’s placed in your skull and jaw bone, that the new teeth will connect to must be perfect with angles and measurements, or you will have problems. Your gums need to heal around those tiny pieces of metal before the real teeth go in, or you will have problems. The lab that makes the real implants must follow directions from the dentist, or you will have problems. So when people that went to Mexico to save money on implants come back to Anna and start having problems, they can go to Dr. Sharp at Anna Dental center. But if I were him, I’d tell you that I’m too busy and booked right now to help you. Or charge you double. He does not need any patients, that office was full of patients the 20 something times I’ve been in there the last 6 months. Now, if you’re still thinking about going to Mexico to save money on dental implants, not dentures, you should probably stop reading this now, because you’re too damn dumb to understand the rest of this. I was one phone call and 10 minutes away from calling Wells Fargo and stopping all payments to Anna Dental Center immediately. I was 10 days away from writing a certified demand letter to Anna Dental Center demanding all my money back. And I have plenty of experience in small claims courts of Collin co as a real estate broker in Mckinney for 24 years and never lost, but maybe 3 cases out of close to 200, so I’m not scared of small claim courts Collin co, this would have been easy.
