Why care for baby teeth when they'll eventually fall out?

Baby teeth serve several crucial functions beyond just chewing. What's the best way to clean my baby or toddler's teeth?

For infants without teeth, gently wipe the gums with a clean, damp washcloth or infant gum cloth after feedings. Once the first tooth emerges, begin brushing twice daily using a soft-bristled, infant-sized toothbrush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). This simple, preventive measure provides significant protection during the cavity-prone childhood and adolescent years.

How do I handle my child's dental emergency?

For knocked-out permanent teeth, find the tooth, handle it by the crown (not the root), gently rinse without scrubbing, and try to reinsert it or place it in milk while heading to our office immediately—time is critical, ideally within 30 minutes. For knocked-out baby teeth, come to our office but don’t attempt to reinsert them, as this could damage developing permanent teeth.

For toothaches, check for trapped food with gentle flossing, rinse with warm saltwater, and use children’s pain relievers if needed. For injuries to lips, tongue, or inside the mouth, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or cloth to control bleeding and use cold compresses for swelling. Always call our office immediately for emergency guidance—we reserve time in our schedule for urgent situations and can provide specific instructions based on your child’s situation.

Why does my child need fluoride and is it safe?

Fluoride plays a crucial role in preventing childhood tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria. It can even help reverse very early stages of decay by promoting remineralization of weakened enamel spots before they develop into cavities. This protection is especially important during childhood when cavity risk is highest and lifelong dental habits are being established.

Fluoride safety has been extensively studied for over 70 years, with overwhelming scientific evidence supporting its safety and effectiveness when used appropriately. Like many beneficial substances, fluoride’s safety depends on proper dosage. Professional fluoride treatments are carefully controlled, and the small amounts in toothpaste and drinking water are well within safe limits. The appropriate time to intervene depends on the intensity of the habit, the child’s age, and whether dental changes are already occurring. We monitor these factors during regular check-ups and can help determine if and when intervention is needed.
