Frequently Asked Questions
Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth to restore your mouth’s function and appearance. This includes procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures that help you regain the ability to chew properly, speak clearly, and smile confidently.
You might need a dental crown if you have a tooth that’s severely damaged, cracked, weakened, or has a large filling that’s failing. Signs include pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold, visible cracks, or a tooth that looks worn down or discolored. Sometimes, a crown is recommended after a root canal to protect the treated tooth.
A filling is used for smaller areas of decay, where we remove the damaged portion and fill the space with composite resin material. An onlay, sometimes called a partial crown, is used when the damage is more extensive but doesn’t require a full crown. Onlays preserve more of your natural tooth structure while providing excellent strength and protection.
Dental implants are designed to be a permanent solution and can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. The titanium post that serves as the artificial root typically integrates well with your jawbone and rarely needs replacement. The crown attached to the implant may need replacement after 10-15 years due to normal wear and tear.
Composite fillings are remarkably strong and can last 7-10 years or longer with proper care. While amalgam fillings have traditionally been known for their durability, modern composite materials have significantly improved and now offer comparable longevity in most situations while providing the aesthetic benefit of matching your natural tooth color.
The crown process typically requires two visits. During your first appointment, we’ll prepare the tooth by removing any decay, reshaping it to accommodate the crown, and taking precise digital impressions. You’ll receive a temporary crown while your permanent one is being crafted at a specialized lab, which usually takes 2-3 weeks.
Caring for dental restorations is similar to caring for natural teeth: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and maintain regular dental checkups. Avoid chewing on extremely hard foods or objects like ice or pens that could damage your restorations, and consider wearing a nightguard if you tend to grind your teeth during sleep.
Most dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for restorative procedures, categorizing them as “basic” or “major” services. Basic services like fillings typically receive higher coverage (around 70-80%), while major services like crowns or bridges might be covered at 50%. Insurance plans often have waiting periods and annual maximums that can affect your out-of-pocket costs.
Prevention is always less expensive and less invasive than restoration. Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antimicrobial mouthwash. Limit sugary foods and drinks, don’t smoke, and visit us for professional cleanings and checkups every six months.
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that fills the gap left by missing teeth by anchoring to the natural teeth on either side of the space. Partial dentures are removable appliances with replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base, secured in your mouth with clasps that attach to your natural teeth. Both options restore function and appearance, but they differ in permanence and how they’re maintained.
